Grogan's Mill Village Center Now Keeps Going After the Farmers Market Packs Up

On December 5, 1982, three 60-foot illuminated doves lit up the intersection of Grogan's Mill Road and Woodlands Parkway. Back then it was the only major crossroads in The Woodlands. For several years after that first lighting, merchants at Grogan's Mill Village Center stayed open late with hot chocolate and carols, and hayrides carried people between the shops and the ceremony, according to a history of the Lighting of the Doves published by The Woodlands.

The center opened in 1974, which makes it the oldest in the community. Over the past three years it has mostly been a construction story. That phase is over. The rebuild itself wrapped up in 2025, but the center only started working as a place to spend a whole day in the past six weeks, when its first new restaurants opened. Until September, a Saturday here centered on the farmers market and ended when the market did.

The Rebuild Came First, the Food Came Later

The timeline matters, because the shops opened in a particular order.

  • May 2023: Howard Hughes buys the center's inline retail and its grocery-anchor parcel. Community Impact reported that the company called the purchase the first step of a long-term revitalization.
  • July 15, 2024: Construction starts on a $16.5 million library and community center built in the old grocery store's footprint, Community Impact reported.
  • June 25, 2025: The 31,363-square-foot retail section reopens at a ribbon-cutting after about 10 months of work. According to Community Impact, the job included foundation repairs, structural work and new patio space, and existing tenants stayed open throughout.
  • September 2, 2025: The Kevin Brady Library and Community Center opens at 2250 Buckthorne Place.
  • December 17, 2025: Plush Nail Bar opens at 2230 Buckthorne Place, Suite 101.
  • January 26, 2026: Suna Studio opens at 2230 Buckthorne Place, Suite 170.
  • September 14, 2026: Yonutz Donuts and Ice Cream holds its grand opening at 2230 Buckthorne Place, Suite 150.
  • September 2026: Cooking Girl is open, as PaperCity reported on September 22. Its address is 7 Switchbud Place, Suite 194, according to Community Impact.
  • October 1, 2026: Hourani's Barbershop opens at 7 Switchbud Place, Suite 191.

For more than a year after the ribbon-cutting, the new arrivals were a library, a nail bar and a studio. Those are useful errands, but people book them, finish them and leave. The restaurants arrived in one September stretch, and they change how long a visit lasts.

What September Added

Cooking Girl is the bigger of the two. In its September 22 write-up, PaperCity reported that the Woodlands location is the 10th for the Sichuan restaurant. Sisters Lily Luo and Yunan Yang opened the first one in Montrose in 2015, and every location so far is in the Houston area. The dining room has a full wall of windows, and there's patio and bar seating. The menu covers dim sum, dumplings served four ways, dry-fried green beans, yu xiang eggplant, dan dan noodles and Sichuan beef.

The hours are the key detail. Cooking Girl is open every day from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. The farmers market closes at 1 p.m. from October through May. That leaves eight and a half hours of Saturday after the last stall packs up, plus a weeknight dinner option the center didn't have before.

Yonutz Donuts and Ice Cream covers the other end of the day. It's a franchise run by owner Staci Loftus, and it held its grand opening on September 14. It sits in the same Buckthorne Place building as Plush Nail Bar and Suna Studio, a short walk from the market stalls.

Hourani's Barbershop arrived two weeks later, on the same Switchbud Place row as Cooking Girl. In its opening announcement on Hello Woodlands, Howard Hughes Communities described it as a family barbering business dating to 1983 that cuts hair for men, women and children and also offers color, keratin and skincare services.

These shops join tenants that never left during construction. When the center reopened in 2025, Howard Hughes named Brother's Pizza, Ome Calli Café, The UPS Store, Woodforest National Bank and Brite Touch Cleaners as established favorites.

A Saturday at Grogan's Mill, in Order

The farmers market still anchors the day, and a lot of what's new is now within walking distance of it.

  1. Get there without the car. The market sits just off the Mill Bend Trail, which runs straight to it through an underpass beneath Grogan's Mill Road, according to the Grogan's Mill Village Association.
  2. Shop the market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Woodlands Farmers Market at Grogan's Mill started in 2008 under the village association's sponsorship. It runs rain or shine at 7 Switchbud Place, and the association says more than 70 vendors set up each week. It also sends out a newsletter every Friday listing who will be there the next morning.
  3. Stop at Yonutz on Buckthorne Place, a few doors from the stalls.
  4. Have lunch at Cooking Girl once it opens at 11, on the Switchbud Place side.
  5. Finish your errands on the same row. Hourani's is next door to Cooking Girl at Suite 191, and The UPS Store and Brite Touch Cleaners are part of the same center.

After this Thursday, the remaining Saturdays on the market's Visit The Woodlands listing are October 31; November 7, 14, 21 and 28; and December 5, 12 and 19. The market usually closes only one Saturday a year, the one between Christmas and New Year's Day.

The Weekday Version

With the library and a restaurant open until 9:30 p.m., the center now has something going on Monday through Friday too.

The Kevin Brady Library runs storytimes on weekday mornings, with sessions at 9:15 and 10 a.m. Preschool Storytime is on Mondays, Toddler Storytime on Tuesdays and Baby & Me on Wednesdays, according to the branch's event calendar. The Evening Book Club for Adults meets on the third Thursday of each month, and the next session is November 19 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The Montgomery County Memorial Library System says its events, programs and classes are free and open to the public.

So a weekday evening can mean the book club and then dinner on Switchbud Place, which the center couldn't offer before September.

What's Still Coming

A few more tenants are on the way, and one of them would make the center a real dinner destination.

  • Turquoise Wine Bar, 2230 Buckthorne Place. In May, owner René Murphy told Community Impact she was aiming to open in late September or early October. She described plans for a pet-friendly patio, a "Bark-Uterie Board" for dogs, live music and a "Wall of Wine" with bottles to buy and take home. Check the bar's website for its opening status before you go.
  • Daniel & Co. Fine Jewelry & Watches, 2260 Buckthorne Place. Community Impact reported in February that it was under construction, with no opening date set.
  • Uni Sushi, 7 Switchbud Place, Suite 190, opening in 2027. Owners Angel Barragan and Rosie Izaguirre are bringing the restaurant back to The Woodlands after its Market Street location closed in January. Community Impact reported the plan as about 3,500 square feet with a covered patio and indoor seating for roughly 230 to 250 guests.

A Uni Sushi dining room with more than 200 seats next door to Hourani's and Cooking Girl would make Switchbud Place a dinner stop in its own right, not just a lunch stop after the market.

November 21 Connects Both Ends of the Day

This year's Lighting of the Doves is Saturday, November 21, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Town Green Park, 2099 Lake Robbins Drive. The Township is hosting. Santa arrives, the doves light up and the fireworks start at 7 p.m., according to The Woodlands Township's event page. The event left Grogan's Mill when the Woodlands Parkway overpass went up in 1995, and it eventually settled at Town Green Park and along The Woodlands Waterway.

November 21 is also a market Saturday. That means you can spend the morning at the village where the tradition started, eat lunch at Cooking Girl at 11, and still be at Town Green Park when the doves light up at 7.
